Temporal differences in snail diversity responses to wildfires and salvage logging

چکیده
Summary Species tend to peak in abundance at different times after fires. Over time, species richness (?) and landscape heterogeneity are prone increase lead greater between-site diversity (?). However, post-fire salvage logging can reduce ?-diversity, both directly through its influence on succession. The as-yet understudied response of land snails long-term habitat modification wildfires forest management is important for decision-making restoration conservation. We expected detect differences the short long term between treatments a natural park Mediterranean Basin. our results showed that was non-significant variable snail community diversity, exception being open-habitat endemic species. Plant succession leaf litter cover were main variables shaped over time Eighteen years fire, had improved composition diversified, irrespective treatment, but threatened disappeared total numbers notably declined. To preserve species, prescribed fires livestock grazing recommended combination with mature areas act as shelters where recover from future disturbances.

Snag longevity in relation to wildfire and postfire salvage logging
Snags create nesting, foraging, and roosting habitat for a variety of wildlife species. Removal of snags through postfire salvage logging reduces the densities and size classes of snags remaining after wildfire. We determined important variables associated with annual persistence rates (the probability a snag remains standing from 1 year to the next) of large conifer snags ( 23 cm diameter brea...
متن کاملSalvage logging, ecosystem processes, and biodiversity conservation.
We summarize the documented and potential impacts of salvage logging--a form of logging that removes trees and other biological material from sites after natural disturbance. Such operations may reduce or eliminate biological legacies, modify rare postdisturbance habitats, influence populations, alter community composition, impair natural vegetation recovery, facilitate the colonization of inva...
متن کاملPost-Fire Seedling Recruitment and Morpho-Ecophysiological Responses to Induced Drought and Salvage Logging in Pinus halepensis Mill. Stands
Salvage logging is the commonest post-fire emergency action, but has unclear ecological effects. In the Mediterranean Basin, drought periods and fire regimes are changing and forest management should be adapted. In summer 2009, a mid-high severity fire burned 968 ha of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.) forest in southeast Spain, which was submitted to salvage logging six months later. In spr...
متن کاملResponses of Ground-Dwelling Invertebrates to Gap Formation and Accumulation of Woody Debris from Invasive Species, Wind, and Salvage Logging
Natural and anthropogenic disturbances alter canopy structure, understory vegetation, amount of woody debris, and the litter and soil layers in forest ecosystems. These environmental changes impact forest communities, including ground-dwelling invertebrates that are key regulators of ecosystem processes. Variation in frequency, intensity, duration, and spatial scale of disturbances affect the m...
متن کاملPost-fire salvage logging alters species composition and reduces cover, richness, and diversity in Mediterranean plant communities.
An intense debate exists on the effects of post-fire salvage logging on plant community regeneration, but scant data are available derived from experimental studies. We analyzed the effects of salvage logging on plant community regeneration in terms of species richness, diversity, cover, and composition by experimentally managing a burnt forest on a Mediterranean mountain (Sierra Nevada, S Spai...
